CopyKitty is a symbol I created to stand up against gatekeeping and strict copyright rules in creative spaces, as well as the general disrespect people give towards those who create transformative art (essay writers, fanartists, remixers, collage artists, etc.) I believe that knowledge and creativity are best when they can be freely shared, built on, and remixed. Throughout all of history, humans have supported each other, shared ideas, collaborated, and innovated using the knowledge of others. In modern times, however, society has become obsessed with the idea of intellectual property and copyright, stifling creativity and slowing down scientific innovations. I hope to raise awareness of this issue and meet likeminded individuals through CopyKitty.
If you want to be a Friend Of CopyKitty, check the pledge to see if you agree with the motivation, and then copy and paste the CopyKitty box code onto your page, social media profile, or anywhere else you want to that accepts html and css.
As a Friend Of CopyKitty, I pledge to:
1. Release my work under a Creative Commons License whenever I can.
While sometimes it is not possible (for example work created for an employer or using assets under another license,) I want my work to become part of the collective human knowledge.
2. Respect and support transformative projects.
I will not participate in harrassment or action against people who base their work on existing sources or use existing work in their own.
3. Take a stand against restrictive copyright laws.
Copyright law only helps corporations. I will educate others on the harm of restricting human knowledge and expression.
4. Respect other's boundaries and terms.
While we may disagree with people who gatekeep their own work, we are not here to harass, bully, or cause problems. If someone doesn't want to participate, leave them be.
